Attacks, praise stretch truth at GOP convention

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and her Republican supporters held
back little Wednesday as they issued dismissive attacks on Barack Obama and
flattering praise on her credentials to be vice president. In some cases,
the reproach and the praise stretched the truth.

Some examples:

PALIN: "I have protected the taxpayers by vetoing wasteful spending ... and
championed reform to end the abuses of earmark spending by Congress. I told
the Congress 'thanks but no thanks' for that Bridge to Nowhere."

THE FACTS: As mayor of Wasilla, Palin hired a lobbyist and traveled to
Washington annually to support earmarks for the town totaling $27 million.
In her two years as governor, Alaska has requested nearly $750 million in
special federal spending, by far the largest per-capita request in the
nation. While Palin notes she rejected plans to build a $398 million bridge
from Ketchikan to an island with 50 residents and an airport, that
opposition came only after the plan was ridiculed nationally as a "bridge to
nowhere."

PALIN: "There is much to like and admire about our opponent. But listening
to him speak, it's easy to forget that this is a man who has authored two
memoirs but not a single major law or reform - not even in the state
senate."

THE FACTS: Compared to McCain and his two decades in the Senate, Obama does
have a more meager record. But he has worked with Republicans to pass
legislation that expanded efforts to intercept illegal shipments of weapons
of mass destruction and to help destroy conventional weapons stockpiles. The
legislation became law last year. To demean that accomplishment would be to
also demean the work of Republican Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana, a
respected foreign policy voice in the Senate. In Illinois, he was the leader
on two big, contentious measures in Illinois: studying racial profiling by
police and requiring recordings of interrogations in potential death penalty
cases. He also successfully co-sponsored major ethics reform legislation.

PALIN: "The Democratic nominee for president supports plans to raise income
taxes, raise payroll taxes, raise investment income taxes, raise the death
tax, raise business taxes, and increase the tax burden on the American
people by hundreds of billions of dollars."

THE FACTS: The Tax Policy Center, a think tank run jointly by the Brookings
Institution and the Urban Institute, concluded that Obama's plan would
increase after-tax income for middle-income taxpayers by about 5 percent by
2012, or nearly $2,200 annually. McCain's plan, which cuts taxes across all
income levels, would raise after tax-income for middle-income taxpayers by 3
percent, the center concluded.

Obama would provide $80 billion in tax breaks, mainly for poor workers and
the elderly, including tripling the Earned Income Tax Credit for
minimum-wage workers and higher credits for larger families.

He also would raise income taxes, capital gains and dividend taxes on the
wealthiest. He would raise payroll taxes on taxpayers with incomes above
$250,000, and he would raise corporate taxes. Small businesses that make
more than $250,000 a year would see taxes rise.

MCCAIN: "She's been governor of our largest state, in charge of 20 percent
of America's energy supply ... She's responsible for 20 percent of the
nation's energy supply. I'm entertained by the comparison and I hope we can
keep making that comparison that running a political campaign is somehow
comparable to being the executive of the largest state in America," he said
in an interview with ABC News' Charles Gibson.

THE FACTS: McCain's phrasing exaggerates both claims. Palin is governor of a
state that ranks second nationally in crude oil production, but she's no
more "responsible" for that resource than President Bush was when he was
governor of Texas, another oil-producing state. In fact, her primary power
is the ability to tax oil, which she did in concert with the Alaska
Legislature. And where Alaska is the largest state in America, McCain could
as easily have called it the 47th largest state - by population.

MCCAIN: "She's the commander of the Alaska National Guard. ... She has been
in charge, and she has had national security as one of her primary
responsibilities," he said on ABC.

THE FACTS: While governors are in charge of their state guard units, that
authority ends whenever those units are called to actual military service.
When guard units are deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan, for example, they
assume those duties under "federal status," which means they report to the
Defense Department, not their governors. Alaska's national guard units have
a total of about 4,200 personnel, among the smallest of state guard
organizations.

FORMER ARKANSAS GOV. MIKE HUCKABEE: Palin "got more votes running for mayor
of Wasilla, Alaska than Joe Biden got running for president of the United
States."

THE FACTS: A whopper. Palin got 616 votes in the 1996 mayor's election, and
got 909 in her 1999 re-election race, for a total of 1,525. Biden dropped
out of the race after the Iowa caucuses, but he still got 76,165 votes in 23
states and the District of Columbia where he was on the ballot during the
2008 presidential primaries.

FORMER MASSACHUSETTS GOV. MITT ROMNEY: "We need change, all right - change
from a liberal Washington to a conservative Washington! We have a
prescription for every American who wants change in Washington - throw out
the big-government liberals, and elect John McCain and Sarah Palin."

THE FACTS: A Back-to-the-Future moment. George W. Bush, a conservative
Republican, has been president for nearly eight years. And until last year,
Republicans controlled Congress. Only since January 2007 have Democrats have
been in charge of the House and Senate.

I remember crying such happy tears when I saw their picture in the paper, june 16th. as she married her lifelong partner, Phyllis Lyon in California. Two beautiful, incredible pioneers, 87 and 84.

Today, the same picture heads Del's obituary. Love, Honour and Respect to her wife, Phyllis, with my most sincere condolences, my tears of pride and sorrow.

We're just about at the end of May...Lyme Awareness Month. I've talked some of our daughter's struggle with this disease...and how there's a political battle over the treatment of Lyme. As bad as it is down here...you guys have it worse because, whether someone gets the coverage for treatment is based ONLY on the absolute worst test out there...up to 85% false negatives!

The BC Medical Board forced your best (and I mean BEST)Lyme-literate doc, Dr. Ernie Murakami, to retire...though he still tirelessly advocates, he can no longer treat. He was the doc who saved my daughter's life in 2001...the only payment he ever mentioned was that she someday be able to give a grandchild for him to delight in.

Upon completion of the April "Poem-A-Day" writing challenge...I found myself with some oiled brain parts, a great supportive community of poets on the writer's digest site, and apparently this "badge"...which I will be seeing for the first time as it's posted 'cos it came in code. *Takes deep breath...blows trumpet....*

I never knew what a "sestina" was before this...it was bloody hard and required a bicycle pump to inflate some left-brainage...but it turned out to be the most satisfying...ain't that always the way!

Just the buzz of the strike and folks raising their voices has already been effective...they took homosexual communities, bisexual communities, DEPRESSION communities, etc. off the search engines too...and have put them back on now.....so please don't think it won't mean anything and doesn't matter to you because you have a paid account already...they're talking in little sneaky steps, where most wouldn't read....we can't bitch later about being powerless to stop them messing with our content, when we don't speak as they take power in small increments. ONE VOICE NOW...will keep all our individual voices happening. Remember that old saying...with freedom comes responsibility. Just take a look at America in the last nearly eight years because of apathy...and how Americans are scrambling to get up to speed and use their voices now 'cos the middle class is in the crapper....let that serve as an example. Take one day, please...we can still talk on emails, phones...or unplug...take a spring walk...play with kids. It's not about what account you have...it's about being asleep at the wheel and wondering why, a short while later, we crash. Standing Women will stand again on May 11, 2008.

Last May hundreds of thousands of women and girls, along with the men and boys they love, in 75 countries and on all continents of the world stood together in parks, on beaches, in churches, at graduation ceremonies, in their backyards and at school yards or anyplace they could find to stand in a global wave of humanity in support of a better world for our children.

We will be standing for the world's children and grandchildren, and for the seven generations beyond them. We dream of a world where all of our children have safe drinking water, clean air to breathe, and enough food to eat. A world where they have access to a basic education to develop their minds and healthcare to nurture their growing bodies. A world where they have a warm, safe and loving place to call home. A world where they don't live in fear of violence-in their home, in their neighborhood, in their school or in their world. This is the world of which we dream. This is the cause for which we stand.

Content Strike planned for Friday

Some of you may not be aware of some stuff going on behind the scenes here on LiveJournal; there is a 24 hour "Content Strike" planned for Friday. I didn't know an issue had arisen until I saw notice posted elsewhere about the strike and started to search into why people were so upset.

It boils down to this:

There's a Russia-based company in San Francisco called SUP who bought LJ about three months ago.

As part of the sale, they are supposed to work with an Advisory Board made up of long-term LJ users (one of them being the founder of LiveJournal, brad) and are expected to handle changes in a specific manner (i.e. posting announcements in news).

They recently re-did the account structure. Before, new users had 3 options:

Basic (free, without ads, limited features)

Plus (free, with ads, more features like more user pics)

Paid (not free, no ads, all features).

SUP has recently removed Basic Accounts and new users must now choose between paying for a full account or dealing with ads on a "plus" account.

At first, SUP wanted to get rid of the Basic accounts (free, no ads) all together, "upgrading" those who had them to Plus accounts (free, with ads). After some uproar, they seemed to do a small turn around and will now allow old members with a member number below 15136000 (it's the number beside your journal name on your profile page) to downgrade to Basic if they choose. But, new members will still not have the option of free with no ads.

Ok, so what's the big deal? This all seems like just standard business. The Paid account is really not all that expensive ($20/year) if you don't want ads. The problem comes with HOW they did this. There was no news announcement, a disregard of the Advisory Board and people are really feeling like they've been shafted by the underhandedness of it all. Do you like the spin SUP put on it?

A few words about the strike: it's not designed to really hurt the business. A single day strike simply won't do that any more than a day's boycott of a gas station will hurt the oil companies. It's simply about users making a statement that this is OUR site. WE drive this site through our content and we CARE about how the site is run. Basic account users create content, too and are a valuable resource.

As an example of how much we really DO influence what's going on: recently, SUP removed subjects relating to gay, lesbian and bisexual orientations, sex in general, fan-fiction and depression from the searchable topic headings. (Depression?!) The fallout from LJ users about that made them reverse it. So, we really DO make a difference. Consider the strike, just to put your two cents in.

The user beckyzoole originally proposed the idea of a strike and after much input and debating, the one-day content strike is on for this Friday, March 21, from midnight GMT to midnight GMT.

For 24 hours, we will not post or comment to LJ. Not in our own journals, not in communities. Not publicly, privately, or under friends-lock.

This is a protest that will have long-lasting effects, showing up forever in the daily posting statistics.

This is a protest that will not harm LJ in the long run, as leaving LJ might do.

This is a protest that will demonstrate the power of community, as all users unite to support Basic users and the concept of adfree space.

This is a protest that will educate the new owners that LJ is driven by user-created content.

Content Strike Friday March 21, from midnight to midnight GMT

We are holding the Content Strike because we want to demonstrate that LiveJournal is content-driven.

We are holding the Content Strike because we want the new owners of LiveJournal to better understand the power and resolve of the LJ Community of Users.

We are holding the Content Strike because all of us, Paid, Permanent and Plus users as well as Basic, want to demonstrate our solidarity as a Community of Users. We do not consider Basic users to be freeloaders, we consider them to be valuable content-providers and Friends.

We are holding the Content Strike because we ache to do something to show our displeasure, and commenting on the news post -- even with cat macros -- just isn't powerful enough!

The strike has three terms:

Restore basic accounts for new account creation.

Inform users before any change to the site that affects how we use the site or demands on our resources.

Run change proposals by the Advisory Board and take their advice into account before implementation of any change.

We enter the Medicine Wheel from the East, both and neither beginning

and end. This is the place of Spirit, place of ancestors, past and

future…time is Man’s measure. It is the place of Being. Breathe and

understand…Being. This is the first of Seven Directions, the acceptance of

the One-ness of Being. There is no separation. There is no outer and

inner, no us and them, no greater or lesser. There is no separation from

Love and Being. Cry the joyful, “I AM!” Without you, there is no universe.

Without the universe, there is no you. There is only one and nothing…the

straight line and the circle…all is made from this.

An arrow points and we move to the South of the Wheel, place of

emotions. This place is about childhood and its open trust. It corresponds

with the Second Chakra, the Belly, where all emotional memories are kept.

Those memories not dealt with can jump out and carry a wounded child

constantly back to a familiar, dysfunctional role in choices and action, when

trust is broken.

Why would we walk here then? Because it is the open trust that calls us into

life and movement, calls us to discover and be amazed by the possibility of a

gift inside every moment. What child do you cultivate within your being?

What child comes to all your decisions and choices? What guidance, what

love, what support, and what forgiveness does your spirit offer daily to this

child of wounded children? Forgive, seven generations back and seven

generations forward. To evolve, mistakes must be made.

Move the energy, consciously, from Belly Chakra, upward to the Heart

Chakra. A heart feels heavy that must constantly reach down to the

belly to comfort. Breathe and visualize the proper alignment.

Now, instead of continuing the usual clockwise movement on the Medicine

Wheel, we move from the South, directly north. As we cross the centre

heartstone, squares of light and colour form a lotus blossom of rooms, of

foundation. It opens the Crown Chakra as we continue to the North of the

Wheel, place of counsel, thought and help. Bring your state of being spirit

and trust here, the Third-Eye Chakra. When you seek the truth of peace,

you’ll find you carried it all along. You carried it in your being and have

only to choose it, then consciously remember within your choices. This

strings the bow in the trinity of Spirit, Heart, and Mind. When these are

balanced, the arrow may be cocked, east to west, spirit to earth and action.

The four….foundation’s number…the beginning

The Fifth Direction is “Below,” the earth, our humanity and humility…the action,

learning. Sixth is “Above,” the circular overview, Yin of reflection…the action,

teaching by our own example. Seventh of the Seven Directions is, “All My

Relations,” the actual energy connection of All.

light, shadow and movement that is your sacred space, your vehicle and

protection. Visualize and expand your sense of being in this vehicle and

where this vehicle can take you within.

The flow of energy is fluid and malleable, even though it appears,

sometimes, someone else has the power to build a solid obstacle in your

path. It is only an illusion that your spirit can be trapped…their only power is

what you willingly gave in your desire for things to be outside of yourself.

What happens to us in the everday of this life is what gives us thread and

dye…what tapestry we would weave of it is in our hands. It’s the magic we

do get to perform and be a part of. IT WOULD BE UNFAIR TO READ THIS

AS CALLING NEGATIVE OR BAD EVENTS TO YOU…THERE’S DEBRIS,

FLOTSAM THAT JUST IS…BUT SHOULD NOT DEFINE LIFE IN ITS BEING.

Give your love to the world. Let it flow from the spring held deep within your

spirit. Let it pour peace on you in its passing. Begin to welcome abundance

when it seems there is none, by making ceremony of giving thanks for what

you do have. Put light and shadow in different places than usual. Remove

clogged filters that have you seeing want, instead of abundance. Release the

negative, inverted energy you have been willing to believe and make room

for in your life. Would you let an uncomfortable guest stay without question

or expectation of conduct in your home?

Think of the rooms in your life. How big the room for love and friendship?

How big the room of illusionary possessions? How big the room to hide

unfinished business? How big the room for self-punishment, with its warped

mirror…perhaps given by someone else…but held by you?

Choose new rooms for your life. Give yourself permission. Give yourself

welcome to finally live and fill your home. Decorate with love and laughter.

Open your arms to it….open your heart and spirit to it. Release yourself from

your past thinking and create yourself in the light and beauty the Creator

intended.

The dance of existence…breath…that which is between birth and death.

Two golden orbs dance…the spirit (death) just beyond reach…the spirit (birth) between the legs.

The Sacred Spiral Dances…both in East’s spirit and West’s will…death and birth.

Three golden orbs dance…one within, two outside of self. The figure holds the one within and Spirit holds the figure…aware of the dance outside ourselves and the Trinity created.

The West:

Learning…”Myself as all my relations.” Humility…Will…Intuition…Black…Introspection…Earth.

Again, the Sacred Spiral…death and birth…a Labyrinth to walk and learn beyond the two-dimensional happy or sad, good or bad, life.

The figure dances the duality of Humanity…with two heads. One side dances and looks up at the golden orb with happiness. The other side looks down with despair as the second golden orb falls.

The North:

Understanding…”The One-ness of All.” Love…the Mind…Counsel…White…Wisdom…Air.

Balance between movement and stillness…receiving and giving.

A figure reaches for the golden orb…a supporting spirit reaches also, balancing the trinity of orbs.

With the three golden orbs that orbit around the central spinning Eye, the total of golden orbs is 13…symbolic of the moons in the Cycle of Seasons.

A Lotus Flower lies fully open…the colour of water and sky, resting on the deep purple ocean of the Third Eye.

The North-South Band represents Choosing. This is a conduit between emotions and thought…the self-parenting when our immaturity gets us emotionally stuck.

The East-West Band represents Being. The conduit between our spirits (all we have been and all we could be) and our will…all we are reaching for in this Life.

This is an old folk-tale. A young woman is married...and immediately (without so much as a wedding night) the husband leaves on a five-year business trip. A ghost has fallen in love with the bride and, when he finds out that the husband has gone, takes on his appearance...intending to fool everyone. But he loves the woman so much, he tells her the truth...hence, her Paheli...or tough decision. Of course she falls for the ghost...and all will work out in the end. Everyone talks about the "I Have A Dream" speech for MLK Day. Beautiful, yes...but there's another speech he made in April of 1967 that I've just read again. It blows me away...and it blows away time. Listen to some parts:

"Five years ago he [JFK] said, 'Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable,'
Increasingly, by choice or by accident, this is the role our nation has taken--the role of those who make peaceful revolution impossible by refusing to give up the privileges and the pleasures that come from immense profits of overseas investment.
I am convinced that if we are to get on the right side of the world revolution, we as a nation must undergo a radical revolution of values. We must rapidly begin the shift from a 'thing oriented' society to a 'person oriented' society. When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, materialism, and militarism are incapable of being conquered."
